Fall Color Drives

The best fall days happen in the car: a winding two-lane road, hills going gold and red, a stop at an overlook, and cider in the cup holder. We line up Ohio's scenic drives and show the state's official color report with its date.

Where are you headed?

Ohio is first: every designated scenic byway in the state, 31 parks, forests and preserves to stop at, and the dated color report from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

More states are coming. We add a state once its drives are checked against official sources one by one.

Check the color

Fall color moves across a state over several weeks. In Ohio, ODNR expects the far north to peak first and the south last, around the end of October and into November. We show the newest official report with its date, so you know how fresh it is.

Pick a drive that fits the day

  • An afternoon: a byway under 30 miles, like a village loop or a river road, with one stop to stretch.
  • A full day: 30 to 60 miles with a state park lunch stop and a short trail to an overlook.
  • A weekend: one of the long national byways, a lodge or cabin, and no hurry at all.

Pack the car

Back roads mean fewer gas stations and spotty phone signal. Tick things off as you load up, and save room for a pumpkin on the way home.

Time the light

Low sun makes leaves glow. For Cuyahoga Valley National Park, the Park Service suggests morning and late afternoon for photos and says many parking lots fill around midday on warm, sunny weekends. An early start helps at any popular park.
